I'm trying to find a good cache of folk tales that aren't from Europe. I know lots of mythology, but I'm trying not use a stories that invoke religion. Help? The only one I know fairly well is the original version of Mulan.

With my training completed, I'm starting the night shift on Monday. Having two days to transition to that schedule is so much better than one.

But other than placing thousands of stickers, I haven't been doing all that much. I think I spent the entire week trying to get the Sims 2 working again.

I've also been watching a lot of White Collar. Yesterday, I watched episodes one through five. Today, I've watched episode six and been trying to get a working copy of episode seven for the entire day. Even though I have a strong signal, it's been taking ages to load pages, let alone download things.

The blankets my mother and I are doing for "Give a Day, Get a Disney Day" have finally been finished. Cutting one inch strips that are four inches long was surprisingly insanity inducing. Not as much as the SCARY AIR, but few things are. = )

Uhm. I think that's it.

Oh, and I started fiddling with the correction on my parents' wedding photos. You can really tell the one's that the guests took and ones the professional. The ink on the guest snaps have degraded realy badly, with everything with a orange wash. I was very annoyed with one photograph in particular, until Mom pointed out that everything in the room was orange.

The other day, Kizmet and Wisota managed to smoke out and trap a mouse. It was late at night, and I was watching television, and I heard a high-pitch squeaking sound. At first I thought it was bats, but I looked over the half-wall that divides the staircase to the celler from the living room, and noticed that Kizmet had something pinned against the wall.

And as that thing was not a florecent color mousie, I decided to invetigate. It turned out to be an actual mouse! So I dragged Kizmet, then Wisota, into my parents bedroom. The mouse had scurried behind plastic box, so I scooped it up with a tupperware container and set it outside.

The cats are indeed mousers. They just don't know what to do with the mouse after they catch it. = ) If I had ignored the squeaks, though, I think they would have played with it to death. Much like how Kizmet plays the crickets he catches into many different pieces.

I wasn't going to see Avatar. And then I had the oppertunity to see it for free in the movie theater because of a strange customer appreciation gift, so I went. My expectations were so low, the plot of the film managed to overtake them!

I'll even have a cut for talking about the story. )

On the other hand, the film has some of the best world building I have ever seen. The director farmed out the language to an acutal linguist. The set designers and Sigourny Weaver went to talk to a bontonist to make sure they weren't fucking up the terminology. And the film was fucking gorgeous in 3D.

Yesterday was actually my last day at the assignment. I decided to keep the sleep schedual for second shift. Then Manpower called me in for an assignment in the same place, but in a different department.

On day shift.

So I should be in bed, except I'm not because I got up at 11:00! I am a champion sleeper, but as I am somewhat out of my dark hole it's hard. Which is normally really good, except today. = (

My Uncle and his wife had a stroke of brilliance when it came to Christmas presents this year. Either that, or my aunt remembered the conversation we had while driving me from the airport to my grandparent's house. As I have a Uhura action figure, and "Torchwood: Rift War" comic book. Which has a totally lying cover as it's a post-Meat pre-Rest fic, so it's TEAM fic story and not just post-series Two story that I was expecting.

Also, it has a timy-whimy aspect AND Steampunk!Torchwood makes a cameo! And Toshiko is featured taking actions and doing things other than read things off of computer monitors. Oh, and she rides Myfanwy.

The minuses is that, at times, the human cast is drawn very oddly. There are three artists on the book, and it really, really shows. ( The back up feature is drawn beautifully! ) Owen did not show all that well, and cannot really remember what he did.

Today I got sent home early from work. The parking lot was very, very empty, so I'm hoping it's because the machinery was down, and not because there is no more work to do.

But, over the last few days, I made enough to pay for a couple of months of my medication!

The job lot I did today did not require counting, so I could plot out my Holmes BigBang, and I think I got something going here. It's not only post-hiatus, it's post-retirement. Or an attempt at a retirement. Or they're thinking about what to do next, and they are watching the hives of an aquantince to see if they really want to look after bees for the rest of their lives. They're in a rural area, and there are bees, and Holmes brought a chemistry set.

On a completely different note, I cannot get any of my custom content to load in Sims 2. = (

Last night's sleep was not restful. It felt like eight hours of Martian invasion. It felt very werid, as I and a few others had pre-knowledge about how the Martians would behave and what weapons they had because the invaders where straight out of "The War of the Worlds." And everyone else was laughing at our theory when they weren't running from tripods and their heat-ray. I had dug a shelter in the backyard, so I was very worried about the black smoke.

But since I live in a rural area, the probability of them deploying the black smoke was very low. Unlike where my sister lives. But she's smart and GTFO of the city. We played telephone tag, so while I never spoke to her I knew she was alive.

There was also plenty of crack, like Missouri and Mexico sharing a border. And I don't know whether the Martians having some of the "Mars Attacks!" sensibilities would count or not.

Regarding the rumors of a US version of Torchwood to be picked up by FOX:

"MS3K is my shepard, I shall not dismay. They make me laugh at bad movies, so I may have an enjoyment of medicority. I do not require brain-bleach, for you lead me on the path of great LOLs.

"So though I walk though the valley of bad genre media, I shall fear no sporks, for MST3K is with me. Your 'bots and your MADS comfort me. You prepare a fest for the brainmeats in the presence of an unending cultural wasteland. You protect me with hilarity, and my laughter shall never runs out."

I love Batman: The Brave and the Bold. It's probably the only non-news television programing I follow right now. Plus, it looks like Black Canary is moving up in the ranks, which is just awesome.

Since the BTBATB is set in the present, but with lots of silver age charecters, I find myself getting lost on occasion. Which on one hand is great, more charecters getting screen time. But usually they give us the benifit of a name drop, so those not familar with groups like "Challengers of the Unknown" can at least wiki or google them.

Today, there was an unamed talking monkey. Luckily, wikipedia has a excelent cast list with who voiced what roles, so I was able to find out that the detective monkey was Detective Chimp. He was created in the '50s, then faded into obsurity until someone dusted him off for "What Ever Happened to Rex the Wonder Dog", then another cameo for Crisis on Infinite Earths, then DC then realized they had a primate detective and he's cameoed in a lot of other things.

Except for Manhunter, which is why I've never heard of him.

I have a offering at [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti in the graphics sections, with two banners for sale. Which means I put together a quick portfolio of banners I've made at [livejournal.com profile] tocoferol.

Exploiting my remaining health insurance, I went to the dentist and had a cleaning and found out that I had a few cavities, and had those filled in. Was okay, and now I'm waiting for my mouth to have feeling again and very carefully eating one saltine at a time.

Bought the fabric to make the blankets.

And the case I got for my Kindle came. I think I left the wireless on, so I can't try out my new, snazzy cover, but it looks like it will do the job.

I just watched Voyage of the Dammed. Willingly. I just watched the parts with Midshipman Alonso Frame and Wilf, so maybe it doesn't count? I wanted to see what charecter he had, and Wilf is never not awesome.

I forgot to mention the new toy I got for Christmas. Well, two new toys, as I also got ear-flapping Eeyore which sings "If you're happy and you know it" and "If your ears hang low" suitably edited to a plush that flaps it's ears.

Yes, it really is that awesome.

The other new toy is a Kindle 2. I very originally named it Firestarter. I've been playing around with all the various features, with free books I downloaded. I also figured the best way to format fic for it. I downloaded Calibre, and I've been running the .pdf files though it and I'm pleased with the results.

My only complaint was one book was taking hours and hours to convert to .mobi, and then I looked closer and noticed the .pdf file was over a thousand pages long.

We're currently marathoning "House Hunters: International." The buyers are largely not morons. Even the couple currently trying to find a home in Paris, who are incredibally out of their depth, are not acting like idiots. There's just a big gap between buying real estate in suburban Michigan and Paris.

I'm also playing Farmville, where I just opened all my Christmas prezzies. I didn't get a lot of good things, but I did get some higher level chickens and lots and lots of cats.

Today, I recived my Hound Dog on KoL. Which means I've finsihed all the "do X once a day"
