I've been working with various versions of both "Sherlock Holmes" and "The War of the Worlds" canons for my BigBang, and I've been trying to figure out what to do with Mary. I'm mostly following Book!Canon for Holmes, and since the Invasion is post-Hiatus, Mary is dead.
I've spent time at working thinking about it, and after bouncing some various ideas around, I've decided to make the radical decision of having Mary alive post-Hiatus. Something really, really horrible still happens to the Watsons during those few years, but Mary is alive, not ill, and still married to Dr. John Watson.
Also, I finally have a reason why the three of them are in the countryside. Watson has decided that Holmes needs a vacation and fabricates a case out of a few sheep deaths, Holmes figures something is up, but decides to go anyway as Watson has gone though all this trouble and Holmes figures he'll bring his chemistry set for a project that involves lots of sulfer. Mary likes the idea of a vacation outside of London, and is trying to convince John that they should eventually retire to the country.
I have still not worked out why Sherlock thinks that beekeeping is an absolutly fantastic idea. I have worked out that Mary is the one that comes up with the idea in the first place.
