To-day's the vernal equinox! That is, if you're anywhere west of the Greenwich Time Meridian time zone. For those in that time zone and east, for you guys it's tomorrow, as the official time is at 0:27 UST, which is more or less the same time as GMT.

So go celebrate! Or not, but it's one of the few world wide things that most cultures do celebrate one way or another.

The other day I was watching the Bad Wolf/Parting of the Ways two parter - well, I skipped the end of Parting of the Ways as I didn't feel like crying - when I noticed something odd about the big reveal at the end of Bad Wolf.

2003 UB 313, also known as Xena, now has an offical name: Eris. The moon is now named Dysnomia, after the Godesses' daughter. Now, why did the discovers name their founding after a goddess of Chaos? Beause Eris sowed strife between the gods and goddesses with her golden apples the same way the dwarf planet's finding lead to strife in the astronomical community. Yeah, even though I was rooting for Prospina, Eris is a pretty good fit.

Other than that, not much happened today. I went to the job fair, and I found the best job ever: designing simulation environments. More specificaly, ones that relate to current poltical/economic/social acivity. Though, I was not qualified for anything there, it was just intresting to go and see the jobs there. Though, I have to learn both java and flash and actionscript soon.

Uhm. Went to fencing, and... I sucked. But I got to slash in real life, so that's one thing in a sabers favor. I think I like foil a little beter though. For one thing, it's lighter. = )

And I bought books. Too many books, but they were in a fire sale, and I can't resist a cheep book. So there's a book on homosexual love in the nineteenth century, breaking Japanese codes in WWII, a book about the history of the development of nuclear powered space ship, what ifs of American history, and a book about the intersection between language and politcs and culture. Or in otherwords, books about my non-fanish fandoms. I almost got a biography of Beetovan, but evidently I did not. Just as well, as $30 blown on books today was quite enough.

It's nice to know that there are quite a few astronmers pissed off about this Pluto busniess too. here's the article. Apparently the anti-Pluto contigent pushed the thing through after the confrene was pretty much over and almost everyone had gone home.

I'd rather have 12+ planets than having just the 8. Less "bigger is better" but more of a idea that "yes, the universe is bigger than you think." I' all for having a huge solar system, if just letting eope have a bigger sandbox for science fiction stories. Heck, I have a fictioal Soviet colony located somewhere inn the Öpik-Oort Cloud, and a fictional tradinng post in the Edgeworth-Kuiper Belt.

But I'm an occasional astronomy geek with the occasinal intrest in astrology, so I suppose it would be werider not to have bits and pices of of those disiplinces woven into the storytelling. Like the woefull lack of Soviets/Russians represented in science fiction. WTF is up with that? The American space program is better at going places and sending probes. The Russians are better at long-duration space travel. If you're going to say, Mars, it's better to have a workable joint venture because you want the Americans to get you up and do the exploring, but the Russians to do the actual getting there bit as a flight to Mars would be more of a slightly more dangerous extended space stay than exploring/expermienting.

The more dangerous bit would be the cosmic rays which you get considerably less of in Earth orbit. The rays being tiny bits going super face - there was one partical called the "Oh My God" Particle over Salt Lake City that had the energy of a baseball goign going 60 mph - a proton going almost near the speed of light. In the human body, a trip to Mars using current techology, would cause the subject to deterit. in the brain, this would be like the first year of Alztimers Syndrom. (I tried tying this into MST3k, but both the SOL and the Widowmaker seem to hav a small forcefield around them as if you're very close to the ship you don't need a spacesuit, as the force field simulates both gravity and keeps oxygen in. It is quite possible I think too much on making those ships work than it is entirely healthy.)

Pluto is no longer a planet.

Pluto and Charon, along with 2003 UB313 (It will be eventually renamned, hopfully) and Ceres will now be considered "dwarf planets." Pluto and Charon are probably going to be considered a double dwarf planet, but that's just a guess.

Oh, the reason all this happened is that the astronomical community decied on a formal definition of a planet. To be considered a planet, the body:

* must be in orbit around the Sun
* must be large enough that it takes on a nearly round shape
* has cleared its orbit of other objects

Pluto was disqualifd as it has an orbt that takes it though the path of Neptune's orbit.

...Would it be bad form to invite Hades for some consolatary seker pare? Or should I sacrifice a black bull in a pit instead?
