Oct. 31st, 2009 11:13 amMy plans for the day has changed slightly. I'm still handing out candy ( now from noon to 4 ) but apparently the Halloween movie is not on Halloween this year. It was the 29th.
I'm a bit broken up about missing my favorite IU tradition. The film this year was Alfred Hitchcock's Blackmail.
I did do CCC's Halloween Party, though. I dressed up as Lady Luck, and hung out and made a few new friends. Then I went over to one of their rooms, and we watched "New Frontier" and some episodes of Spectacular Spiderman.

Oct. 26th, 2009 11:45 pmReal person. Real situation that came to a very ugly head tonight. Summary from her and how to help below:
I am a disabled military wife and mother of two elementary-aged kids. Due to a delay in processing transfer orders, my husband's move to his next base isn't lining up with the end of our lease. This means we are having to pay for our move out-of-pocket, with the military reimbursing it later. My husband is currently with his ship in another state, so all details of handling the move fall to me.
We had planned to borrow the money for this from my mother. She has always been slightly mentally disturbed; tonight, this hit new levels. In the past two days, she's attempted to kidnap my kids and threatened to kill my mobility dog. She deliberately chose the time when I would be sickest from my low-dose chemo treatments to do this. I severely doubt she plans to honor her promise to pay for the movers tomorrow.
The movers are going to cost roughly $1300. If you can help, please send money to my paypal account, marna.m(a)gmail.com. Please indicate if this is a gift or a loan; we will begin paying back loan amounts as soon as we can. Thank you.

Speaking of money woes, I've been having some of my own, recently. Luckily, it's the "can't get at money" kind, instead of the "no money" kind. It's been going on for about a month already, and I mentioned something about this earlier when I was locked out of my account and couldn't get into it because I needed to do it over the phone, and my phone wasn't charging.
Well, I transfered the money in, and thought that was it. Until I tried to use my debit card the other day and it was denied. What I think is happening is that the bank think my card has been stolen because I'm using it to make relativity small purchases around Bloomington. And, for some reason, even though I've been buying things in Bloomington for the last few years, it reads as stolen card activity. And my cell's borked, of course, and cooperating even less this time than last time.
So I'm heading to the bank tomorrow after class and hoping they can sort out the card stuff in person. It would be just my luck if they couldn't.
Ran the gambit on chat in KoL explaining that it's a good thing that the branches of government has gained power, as the "powers" that they have taken from individuals are one's that those individuals shouldn't have had in the first place. Like, the ability to destroy the ability of humans to own other humans, and the ability to enforce labor laws so you can't pay people pittance or working people to death that is created some kind of virtual slavery. And that unrestrained Captialsim isn't all that better than Soviet communism.
Okay, this is all IMHO, but the impressive part is arguing coherent when tipsy. Well, I had pretty much just chugged my first alcholic beverage in two months, so I was slightly more than tipsy.

Oct. 24th, 2009 06:30 pmWe'll leave aside the fact I thought it was Australian football because I had no idea who the teams were. ( Wolverhampton vs Aston Villa )
I had more thinky thoughts, but I haven't really been able to wake up properly today, so no thinky thoughts to be had. Other than the eternal question "what shall I have for Supper?"

Oct. 20th, 2009 07:29 pmI'm not the best housekeeper in the world, but surely I've been keeping things clean enough that I shouldn't be drowning in flies.
I took a closer look, and it's just ladybugs. So it's not me, it's just that my dorm has lots of little drafts.
...
I also still hate phonetics. I can't think of a project to do! My idea was due on Monday, and I did turn in some ideas, but none of them were right for the class.

Oct. 17th, 2009 04:55 pmI'm still going though with it, as a crappy website is better than no website at all, but this means I'm STILL looking for a place to host MST3K Slash.

Oct. 16th, 2009 11:28 pmI'm temped to do politics and phonetics, comparing far left and far right, but I'm not sure I'd be able to adequately control for regional differences for the different data points. Also, I'm not sure what data points I'd be looking for in their speech, as I'd be looking at unconscious markers instead of using [ing] or [in] in a debate.
I've been think about doing how phonemes are borrowed from one language to another, but I'm not sure whether that's the type of project he'd be looking for. But on the other hand, my thread language could be Welsh, with other examples pulled for different sections.
I think I'll have to look though my Sociolinguistics text book to see what strikes my fancy. I have to see how far I can get with only written materials, as my hear for transcription is horrid.
I'm also amused/frightened that doing a "Who would you cast in a movie of your life?" meme has inspired a short story. Dunno, but it's about trying to break up with your girlfriend by knitting a sweater.

Oct. 13th, 2009 04:41 pmYou are The Lovers
Motive, power, and action, arising from Inspiration and Impulse.
The Lovers represents intuition and inspiration. Very often a choice needs to be made.
Originally, this card was called just LOVE. And that's actually more apt than "Lovers." Love follows in this sequence of growth and maturity. And, coming after the Emperor, who is about control, it is a radical change in perspective. LOVE is a force that makes you choose and decide for reasons you often can't understand; it makes you surrender control to a higher power. And that is what this card is all about. Finding something or someone who is so much a part of yourself, so perfectly attuned to you and you to them, that you cannot, dare not resist. This card indicates that the you have or will come across a person, career, challenge or thing that you will fall in love with. You will know instinctively that you must have this, even if it means diverging from your chosen path. No matter the difficulties, without it you will never be complete.
What Tarot Card are You?
Take the Test to Find Out.
Still OMG tired, my phone still won't charge, but I found my xanax. I need to get a new cell phone battery as well, as I think my battery has dropped dead.
Also, possibly a new fan for my desktop. I do not think it should be making those noises when I play in Second Life.

Oct. 11th, 2009 11:35 amThere is a march in Bloomington today, in solidarity with March for Equality in Washington that is also today. I am not going, because I feel like crap and it is really freaking cold out.
So, have a fun fact about coming out instead: The first person to come out in public was Karl Ulrichs, who outed himself in front of the Congress of German Jurists*, the day after his 42nd birthday, August 29th, 1867. His speech was about the need for homosexual rights, though he was not able to complete his speech as half the chamber wanted him to STFU and the other half was urging him to continue. The moderator asked him to complete his speech in Latin, which Ulrichs was fluent in, but he stopped anyway.
Karl Ulrichs is still considered the father of the GLBT rights movement. And, you know, actually worked hard to include women and transgendered people in his campaign.
*From my understanding, the Congress is/was convention for those in the legal professions. So in attendance would have been judges, lawyers, legal scholars, and law professors.
12 Months of John
Oct. 8th, 2009 08:25 pmJanuary - Pantomimes
February - Interviews from magazines and television
March - Just John
April - Bad Movie Month
May - Theatrical Productions
June - John and Animals!
July - Doctor Who/Torchwood
August - Music Tours
September - Other Television Roles
October - Theater Productions
November - The Audition Shows
December - John and Scott
Obviously, each month needs a picture on top. But do you put little pictures on the unused days? Is there a max amount of little picture days?
I have some pictures I already want to use. I am attempting to be Classy in not including any pictures of John naked or only in his underwear - I hope I make up for that by including John in a Wetsuit. Which means that I can't include anything from Method, because that was the only reason to watch that movie. = P
What the Hell, Hero
Oct. 7th, 2009 07:57 pmI was the first one to speak. I stammered out, "But... but he's British!"
Cue pretty much the entire time for the three of us to try to persuade Sophie that universal health care and evolution are not incomparable. She had the impression that if you think evolution ( especially macro ) evolution exist, then you also must follow the philosophical school thought of egoism, as acting contrary to that fact would be against the doctrine of the survival of the fittest.
It basically summed up to two problems. The first is that evolutionary theory does not adequately explain explain the development of kindness. I talked about some examples about why it would be advantageous to your genes to be altruistic: such as while it's not directly your genes, looking after the well being of a niece or nephew would also continue your gene line.
The other problem is that Sophie needs to study the theory of evolution a bit more. She got tangled up in her mind evolutionary theory and social Darwinism. Which are not the same thing, as one is a conclusion based upon observations and one is an excuse to treat people like crap.
This all sums up why I like Sophie. We come to the same conclusions, even though our thought processes are very, very different.

Oct. 6th, 2009 02:27 pmHe's not only done the two Sherlock Holmes comics, but he's also done adapted a version of the War of the Worlds, and one of the authors in "Torchwood: Rift War!"
I think he's now my favoritest comic writer/adapter ever. But don't worry, Carole is still my favoritest mixed medium writer ever.

Oct. 3rd, 2009 11:14 pm#1: The MST3K 512 AU. This would be the one where Joel doesn't escape but Mike is shot up there because Joel does some fast talking that experimenting on Mike would be way better than killing him. Things are awkward, as no one on the Satellite really knows what to do with Mike and vis versa.
In this, I also include my three bits of KTMA cannon: Beeper existed, Cambot can talk, and Joel still writes letters to Sandy. All of which really happened! Unfortunately, the first two happened in the pilot...
#2: Torchwood Genderswap: A routine Rift pick up goes south when the piece of tech implodes. Jack does his meat shield impression, but instead of being blown to pieces he's tuned female. And not only does the tech not wear off, anything less than death by atomization leaves Jack female shaped. This is how the story of how Jack mourns that the shoes he's been wearing for the last few decades don't fit, and how everyone else deals way less well. Set post-Meat, but time passes without "Reset" ever occurring. Also includes Alice and Steven Carter, and Rhiannon, Johnny, David, and Mica Davies.
#3: Jeeves and the Jewels that Weren't: Bertie and Jeeves can't even escape young lovestruck couples and imperious Aunts in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. This is the only story where I had to make a seating chart.

Oct. 3rd, 2009 08:26 pmI just finished watching Twilight. I've peaked into the fandom, and it seems to be mostly AU stuff. Which is sad, because it could be completely awesome.
