Reason #3437 Why I'm glad I'm out of High School:

On the St. Louis news, a high school teacher was put on suspension for various things. Not following the lesson plan, letting his students use "inappropriate" technology, and oh, yeah, WIZARDRY. Because he did a disappearing toothpick trick.

There's two parts to this. One, that wizardry is an offence that needs to be punished. The second is that you're stupid enough to mistake a slight of hand trick with magic. ( There's the "does magic actually exist or not" part, but I'm tired and don't feel like it. )

In SRS Business news, apparently the hub for the AT&T/Gov'ment spying on the internets is also near St. Louis. The OMG WIZARDRY was on first.

What do you want to bet he was one of the few popular teachers, one of the few that taught not the way some dried up pencil pusher who hasn't seen the inside of a classroom in several centuries wants, but in a way that interests and engages the students, so that they actually learn more than how to sleep through a lesson without snoring.

We had one like that at our school, he didn't go by the book, but after he left, we didn't learn half as well from the ones who followed.

He probably was. Mostly because al of the interesting teachers end up piss off some straight-laced person and get canned or disciplined or something.

Or they end up leaving because the pay is so terrible that they can't afford to teach any more.

Wizardry?! I totally laughed out loud when I heard that.

I want to be a wizard when I grow up :-)

Clearly, slight of hand tricks are works of the Devil and must be expunged from the school system. THINK OF THE CHILDREN.

Yeah, I've heard some pretty upsetting things come from Altoona and Eau Claire in the last few months, too. These two stories in particular I found to most upsetting on the 'paranoid-obsessive parents' front.

Yeah, keep your dirty hippy rainbow necklaces out of our traditional schools. Now go and copy down your multiplication tables 20 times on the chalk board.
