The names we give today are mostly chosen on how much we might arbitrarily like it or the associations we have with it, and not based on the fact that it really means "God is gracious" or "beautiful."
Then, occasionally we bestow names like Honesty and Mercy. The last names of Miller and Tanner and Smith reflect what one of our ancestors were long ago.
More specficaly, I've been thinking about the Doctor. And whether "Doctor" is is actual name, transliterated into English - or a name with a similar meaning like "Healer" or whatnot.
Or not, like how the Brigadier is... the Brigadier. (Yes/No? I haven't actually seen him in anything yet though I've heard he's v. cool.)

Date: 2007-02-06 01:56 am (UTC)Though, from what I've heard about that era, it does sound good and I should track some of that down. And I've even heard that UNIT is extremely competent and can actually look after the Earth! And I can totally believe that because they seem to have discipline, yet not wander off into zealotry... which seems to be the major problem with the two Torchwood branches.
