Mom and I started cleaning out the basement. Mom cracked a joke that it seemed very familiar: Mom and I are usually the ones to clean out the basement as Dad's working either across town or across the country.
We didn't venture into the places that still had standing water, but stuck to places where the water already receded. Of what we were able to go though, the majority of the unsavagable materials were the cardbord boxes themselves, as both they and the packing paper on the bottom absorbed the water keeping the things contained protected from the sewage. Of what couldn't be saved, the majority of it were either papers or books, as the paper just wicked up the water deeper into the box.
We have most of the books sitting out still, and we're going to check if they mould. As for the papers, I think they're ruined, but Dad needs to look them over to tell himself that, yes, they're ruined.
The worst part was the dripping boxes. Because the water would run down my legs and all I can think was "I'm being covered in sewage!"
The plumber also came by today. He snaked the drain, and unblocked the pipes. Then got out the nifty sewer scope and snaked that down the pipes to see what caused the blockage. Except there must have been a sale on curved pipes as the scope went though thirty feet of distance from the center of the house to the outside - which is a distance of ten feet, linerarly.
So we don't know what caused the blockage, as the camera couldn't make it out to where it was. There's several running theories, but I still think it's the neighbors across the street, and it was caused by damage they did while installing their retaining wall. Mostly because they fucked up their water system when they broke the water main, and I'm thinking it flowed downstream to us.
