After a quick march though Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, and I don't see what the big fuss is about. Well, that and the whole "They follow the movie-verse?!" thing. I mean, it's pretty distracting to have the country of the Quadlings being a swamp when Glinda the Good Witch of the SOUTH, the SOUTH not the NORTH. And where are the purple houses in the Gilkians? And why must I suffer more red shoes?
And the fact that they screwed up the whole royal line, but he made that up by calling Ozma's full name as Ozma Tipercious. But all these little tidbits of book cannon just wanted me to have silver shoes!
For a bit of backstory. I am a big Oz fan. I pretty much HAD to be, because the place I lived in New York had a gigantic Oz Fest every year where the town grew three times it's normal size, and it was all Oz all the time for three days. And the munchkins came, there was a parade, a carnival, a costume contest, and so on... It was a big deal. So I've read the first six Oz books (Last time I checked there's 40 books considered cannon.) and seen both movies, and seen The Wiz a few times. I haven't managed to see The Wizard of Oz stage production yet, though. And the musical Wickad either.
So, yeah. I like the books far better than the movies to begin with, so I guess I was unknowingly already against the book before I started.
But if you are more familair with the movie, or haven't seen the movie or read the books, it's good. I just don't see the mass appeal. But I couldn't put it down either, so I would recomend one borrows it, not buys it. because I doubt I'm going to read it again anytime soom.
