I've been watching the news a lot lately, and I've noticed that these reporters/hosts/pudits keep mentioning whether or not the current warfare in Lebonon is World War III.
Can we get beyond this? It's not World War III. We're up to at least World War XI by now, as the criteria of a "world war" is multiple countires fighting on multiple continets. Thus the world wars started several hundred years ago when the Euppean powers started carving up chuncks of the world. You could go even farther back to the Punic Wars, but that only had two diffrence countires atackking each other, even if they were on seperate continents.
But also, a little more recently, couldn't the Cold War and the War on Terror be considered world wars? Fighting on multiple continents by multipile parties on either side.
As for the recently more broken out hostilites, the only thing I really have to say is that the Lebonese civilians are .fucked. I would go on to say the Isrealis are as well, but that's not new. It's like saying the sky is blue.

For example, both the Korean and Vietnam wars are both part of the Cold War, althought the heart of the Cold War is a poltical conflict and an arms race that built lots of big toys that nobody really used. However, this is just my opinion.
On a side note, I'm tired of all these people screaming "OMG! This conflict is a sign of the end times!" I'm going to have to deal with a pile of them tomorrow, which doesn't please me.

Date: 2006-07-23 01:36 pm (UTC)It's very tiresome and appears to be a US only problem. It's particularly annoying to us, because what happened to us last would have ended in hate law charges at home. I'll explain what happened more detail in my personal journal later, but it's gotten so bad that I know that someone is going to get physically hurt or worse in the next few years.
