Lost Souls Review

I love radio plays. I also love Torchwood. Match made in heaven? Quite possibly. I would be thrilled if they would produce a few more of these. ( And kinda wish that with the five episode mini-series, we got a few more of these so we get our Torchwood fix of 13. )

Eve, Gareth, and the majority of the minor charecters were very good. Freema was good, but not as good as Eve and Gareth. Professor Johnston's actress suffered from having to drop so much technobable. And John... *sighs* When he was not giving insane amounts of Technobable, he was okay. He does the same style of acting as he always does, and that doesn't translate well to audio - but he's much better here then the audiobooks were.

The plot suffered from being aired for two different markets. The first market, those listening to the "Big Bang Day" on Radio Four, were presumed not to not know much about Torchwood, thus necessitating the huge exposition dump in the beginning. I think it also explains why Martha's constant "How are you dealing with Tosh and Owen's deaths?" to everyone - having to establish that their friends died, and died recently.

The other audience were Torchwood fans. There were probably a sizable number just tuning in to hear the audio play, and those who are buying the CD, this group was thought to need all of the CERN exposition and "particle physics for dummies" exposition blocks. And, well, needed actual science content to balance out the technobabble quotient, especially towards the climax. I'm chalking the "Something got though!" to the scifi, because this worst case scientific scenarios happen in scifi. ( Example 'What Ever Happened to Sarah-Jane?' in SJA where everybody missed the big giant asteroid. )

I only found one major plot hole. When Jack is attempting to convince Dr. Johnson to shut down the machine, he doesn't mention that Gwen and Ianto are in the tunnels, and considering that the good doctor is still concerned about Dr. Oliver after he threatened them all with a gun, it was probably the better tactic to take.

The Growly Monster was scary enough for it's purpose, but reached it's max creep factor when doing a number on Ianto's mind. I had no problem spotting Lisa's cameo, and I think I heard Tosh's as well. I didn't hear anything that sounded like Owen.

My favorite scenes were the Martha-Jack telephone conversation with Ianto, Gwen, and the Weevil in the background. The continuation of the "Voice of a Nightingale" was good to hear, and the innocent sounding voices of the Terrible Twosome saying that the Weevil happened to jump into the bay, poor dear. It just barely tops the scenes with Gwen and Ianto in the tunnels. The Mindfuck of Ianto Jones, and Gwen the Lioness tells the monster to go fuck off.

The lines "Cold, damp, underground - I could have stayed in Cardiff for this!, "My bike has a bell! *ting ting*" and "I don't want to die... in Switzerland." were the best one liners. Natch.

I liked the careful dance the script made on the religious/atheist hot button, especially dealing with Dr. Oliver. This has nothing to do with atheists calling me delusional and the religious that I'm going to hell. Not at all!

No, I don't count the fact that the Higgon's boson as an side effect of the annihilation of protons and anti-protons to be "proof of an atheistic universe." Science follows the scientific method, which is taking a theory that can be proved or disproved though experimentation. Faith is not something that can be put though experimentation, therefore, saying that science can disprove the existence of God is stupid. ( The inverse that belief in God means that the scientific method doesn't work for other things is also stupid. )

Coming back to Torchwood, though, I can say that the outing was an success. Lots of things right, with only one or two small bits wrong, and that makes [livejournal.com profile] msp_hacker a happy camper.
