twincityhacker: hands in an overcoat's pockets (the dramas of a light tech)
From the what I have gathered on the drama about the possible userinfo page, I have learned an important life lesson:

For the love that is good and holy, don't post something like that on the weekend.

Mostly because the resentment will just feed on eachother and make it turn out much worse than than it is. Actually, a feedback loop is probably the whole deal with wank too. It starts bad and then just gets worse and worse 'til
someone kills it.

Now, I need to go to sleep before I decide it would be a really good idea to do various things that I'll definatly regret in the morning.

A curosry reading of the statistics on the livejournal statistic page would make it appear that the teenage demographic represents about 10% of the livejournal population

A curosy reading also points out that the statistics page is a pack o' lies. For one thing, the numbers don't make any sense at all. There is a claim of about 10,469,378 total accounts. However, one of the questions that every journal has is whether the account holder is female, male, or does not report gender. These totals added together only provide a total account number of 5,742,008. So what ar the other five million accounts, fish?

Then I peeked at the raw stats page. While the "typical teenage user" is about 1,874,387 acounts, they just barely outnumber the age set of 1,044,477 account holders that report their age as five. In fact, 1,984,525 users report their ages as under twelve years old.

Another 1,347,583 users report their ages between 20 to 24. The whole rage of 20 to 29 is 1,787,675.

So, right now I have about 5,646,449 accounts out of the total 10,469,378, so that means at the bare minimum at least half of livejournal's userbase reports their age as under 30.

This still does not explain why there is no Sesme Street ads for the tenth of their userbase that livejournal seems to be neglecting by targeting another tenth of their population. It also does not explain why it's not more female oriented, as the number of female users outweigh the male ones even if one assumed that all the users that did not report their sex were male.

Then again, I have no idea where the heck all of this rancor is coming from. Sure, I'm a "typical teenage user" and I'm not the sharpest person on Earth, but there's no reason to start attacking the staff. LJ is a busniess, and they're attempting to broaden their appeal. Was the new userinfo a massive mistep? Yeah. But are they trying to farm out everyone over the age of nineteen? No. I think Vox is SixApart's attempt to broaden thier userbase. There aren't many sites dedicated to adult users, and they're trying to attrach a customers that would not join livejournal because the possible users percive it as non-adult oritened. Like how a company will put out diffrent lines of cars or cat food to attract diffrent sorts of cutomers.
