Jan. 18th, 2005 05:38 pmWhen I first started reading The Jungle by Upton Sinclair I thought it was about the evils of capitalism for the first two hundred pages because it sure wasn't about the main charecter since I doubt even the most sadistic fanfiction writer would put a charecter though that. Then I hit the final strech, and just as Jurgis was making his revelation about class struggle, I had a revelation of my own: the book isn't about the evils of capitalism, it's putting the reader though six years of capitalistic hell before lifting the reader up and telling them the joys of socalism.
And for a few brief moments, eveything made sense.
