May. 19th, 2004 09:12 pmYesterday, we made rocket fuel in science class. Mr. N and Mrs. T were have a demenstration day with liquid nitrogen, and froze various things. An egg in a frying pan, a bannana that was used as a hammer and ballons.
To make the LOX (I've been looking for an excuse to use this ever since I saw it) Mr. N filled a ballon with pure oxygen and stuck it in a Dasmer flask of liquid nitrogen. Since oxygen has a liquifying point a little higher than nitrogen, it, well, liquifed.
It turned out to be this color. But it only stayed liquid for a little while before it vaproized.
And today Mrs. T made underwater fire using bleach, water, calcium carbide, and hydrogen chloride (I think. The acid she put in with the bleach made chlorine gas)
Of course, nothing rates up there with the methane soap bubbles that I got to light on fire.
