"Clay?"
He blinked his eyes open, and looked up at his lab assistant. "Lar?"
"Are you okay? No, that's a stupid question, of course you aren't. Are you injured?"
Clay experimentally moved his fingers and toes. "No. But what would I be injured from?"
"Being struck by lighting, and the fall you took." Lar fluttered ineffectually at Clay's side. "I was worried that you were - you know."
"Well, I'm not." Clay said, still hazy.
"But you don't remember the lighting?" Lar insisted.
"No. The last thing I remember is getting a box of supplies out of my car." Clay slowly sat up. "But lighting would explain the scorch marks on my shoes."
"Here, let me help you up." the lab assistant said, and did so. Clay only nearly slipped out of his arms once.
"We should go inside. I don't want to get struck again." Clay slowly said.
Lar nervously laughed, and picked up the box that Clayton had been carrying. "So, do you want to go to the lab or the, uh..."
"The lab."
"Okay." he replied, and the two mad scientists made their way out of the parking lot and into the building. They made their way slowly and in silence, Clay trying to appear that he didn't need support.
"So, how do I look?" Clay said, stronger in tone than he was before.
"You've got a white streak in your hair now. And your mustache"
Clay made an affirmitive sound.
"It looks like some bird... uhm, I don't know." Lar paused to consider his words very carefully. Maybe you should just see for yourself. We're almost at the lab."
Clay nodded, as they turned the last corner.
"But, Clay? It really looks fine."
"Right." the scientist said dubiously as he opened the door to the lab, looking for a mirror.
"But, honestly, I've never seen this sort of effect from a lighting bolt before." said Lar.
Clay fingered the steak of grizzled hair. "It's a family tradition."
"What," Lar said somewhat sarcastically, "getting struck by lighting or the werid effect on the hair?"
Clay shot a glare at his lab assistant. "Yes."
"Oh." the other man said, chagrined. "Interesting tradition."
"Interesting until you wake up singed in a parking lot, you mean."
"Well, at least in Deep 13 we don't have to worry about lighting strikes." Lar said, trying to turn the conversation around to a more positive note.
"It'll just travel though the wiring." the scientist groused.
"Wouldn't a charge disperse before it got down there?"
"If it did, would we have electricity?"
"I suppose not." The two sat in silence for awhile.
"so, how do you think the..." Lar started.
"Lar," Clay addressed him firmly. "I am not interested in talking about this right now, okay?" and turned back to the mirror.
"Okay." he said awkwardly. Lar then saw a box of supplied that the two had not yet taken down, and saw it as a chance to escape the room. "I'm just gonna take this downstairs. Call me if you need anything... hon."
"Fine." the Clay said, not shifting his eyes from his reflection.
"Right." Lar replied, and retreated into the dark.
