I can picture Crow now!
The following thought kept me amused for a good half-hour at work today. Knowledge of the hardcore MiSTe and the new Star Trek kinds is needed to fully share my joy.
The majority of the cadets from the Star Fleet Academy were drafted for the Vulcan mission because the rest of the fleet was out. The Enterprise in particular was staffed almost entirely of students with the only seasoned crew member is the Captain.
You might even call it a kids crew.
The captain is out of commission, and thus the protagonist gets to be captain, and awarded with their own commission and the end of the story.
Coincidence? I THINK NOT. Clearly, Stephen Ratliff is the pen name of J. J. Abrams.
