When the peanut story first broke, I mentioned to [livejournal.com profile] violetisblue that at least it wasn't corn contaminated, as corn is the basic unit of American foodstuffs. Good news everyone: Study Finds High-Fructose Corn Syrup Contains Mercury!

Not all HFCS, but only half - apparently one of the ingredients to make HFCS is made with a process that can lead to some of the mercury in the machine can leak into to the HFCS ingredient. And the best part is that since HCFS is in everything, you have no idea if what you're eating has mercury in it or not! *facepalm* *facepalm* *facepalm*

I was ahead of the curve of this one because I have a friend who is highly allergic to it, and I had helped her find some websites listing products without it:

I'm not too worried about mercury in HFCS, as the tuna sandwich I have once a week has far more mercury in it than all the HFCS I have for the rest of the week.

It's just absurd that people are still using mercury to make the stuff when there's other stuff out there - if just for the workers who have to make the HFCS.
