my personal penguins:

I was wondering about my anti-squee recently, and I finally figured it out. ( Though the personal crazy isn't helping anything. )

The Torchwood portion of my flist? There's about three groups and they all dislike each other. Severely. Hence the negativity that's been swamping my flist for the last few weeks! But I don't want to axe my entire Torchwood flist, 'cause I like you guys quite a bit, but what the fuck am I supposed to do?

I wasn't going to say anything, but jesus christ, there's been three posts in the last two days about this. And it's getting worse!

Ouch. Really? What're the groups?

(I notice nothing)

Just a few rough organizations of friends. It's really frustrating because while the groups going at it have no one person in common - except for me - but their only separated by one paltry degree ten different ways.

Or is it two degrees? Person A has person B friended who is friended with person C who is friends with person D.

It's... rather subtle. I don't think anyone else would see it unless they happen to be in my exact vantage point.

I second Smithy's ouch. Fortunately for me, my flist has mostly been of the non-shipping variety, so it hasn't really hit me, or at least, I only get one side of it :)

I can see how that'd kill your squee pretty quickly.

It's not the shipping. I can deal with the shipping, the bashing, and pretty much anything that people say about the text. ( Unless they say bad things about Estelle... )

Some members of my flist have polar oppisete views about everything in Torchwood. The whiplash itself is on occasion deeply entertaining.

It's the personal bitching out that I'm having trouble with.

What's going on, ship wars or something?

God, I wish it was ship wars. Then it would at least be entertaining!

It's more personal attacks and people defining things that really shouldn't be defined by one person. Which is annoying, 'cause they seem like they'd like each other if they weren't yelling at each other.

Personally, I took the "discussion" groups off of my main flist about 6 months ago - I've been a whole lot happier since. It's got to the point where I just comment in the journals of people I know to be sane!

I love the show, I love the characters, and I'm happy to see where the writers take us because it is, after all, their story. I've already seen (on a mailing list) comments to the effect that "these stupid writers just don't understand that Character A and Character B just don't have that kind of relationship!" Which is bloody stupid - whose show is it? Who is developing the canon here? If ChA and ChB are shown in a particular way on screen, it's because that's the relationship they have! If ChA and ChC are shown in a particular way on screen, then it's because that's the relationship they have. Fannish entitlement is all well and good, but protesting because the actual showrunners aren't a part of a particular hivemind is really not going to make anybody happy....

And yes, it's going to get worse before it gets better. I'm not hugely spoilered here, but from what I've picked up along the way, I'd recommend doing a bit of judicious flist filtering before we get to episode 4! ;)

*retreats back to the gen side, away from the rabid shipwars and the nutters who think that ANYTHING involving someone female and/or non-caucasian is automatically sexist and/or racist by definition....*

It's actual people I've friended. But it's not ship wars, which makes it all the worse.

Regarding future episodes, I've battened down the hatches.

And plotting Jack/Estelle.

I actually have a very similar situation - I have all stripes of shippers on my flist, both in who and tw.

My solution? Make a statement, tell them that you don't want it in your journal. If it's brought there, don't engage in them and repeat "I don't want that here" until they listen. Post your own positive stuff/squee.

And. Don't click on cuttags and links to unpleasant stuff. So far that's working for me, but it's the hardest thing in the world to *do*.

It is really, really hard. And I don't know what's going to fly off into the danger zone.

What is up with Torchwood, lately?

I don't know what the deal is, but I really don't like it one damn bit.
