Crack Idea #7983

The First Evil was appearing to Mulder durring "The Truth." Why?

So Mulder's friends would try to help him, alenating them from the FBI and causing the shut down of the X-Files. No X-Files, it becomes less likely that there would be people who weren't evil looking into cases of the supernatural. Now I know that there are military units dedicated to stopping out deamonic activity, but with the X-Files out of the way, it's harder to work against the aliens who evidently are going to to make their own little apycolypse.

Of course, this is factoring in that The First Evil is capable of being crafty, instead of just sucky.

Perhaps the higher-ups are leading the Squad astray? Not destrpying them, because that would be too obvious, but just pointing out the demons over the aliens?

After all, it was shown that some of the military is in the Shadow Goverment.

This is a thing I'm thinking about. In the 1950s, according to Stephen King's Danse Macabre, we trusted the soldiers and the government because they had taken on Hitler and Tojo and won. In the 1970s, we didn't trust the soldiers and the government because of Vietnam and Watergate. In the 1990s and pre-9/11, when X-Files were on and Joss started S4, we didn't have a strong institutional belief in or fear of government, which is why X-Files didn't resonate with me and those themes are not what resonated with me in BtVS S4.

In Sunnydale, the sub-Ts are the threat. Sunnydale isn't Roswell. And with Riley being able to mandate the S7 deployment to Sunnydale and Spike's chip removal, plus being able to work a dangerous op with only his wife as backup means that he's damn near as off the reservation as Colonel Kurtz from Apocalypse Now. I don't know how much the higher-ups have control over him and the Squad.
